About Fargate
A listening experiment built from seven layers of pure stereo tones.
Two ears, one perceived beat
With stereo headphones, each ear receives a slightly different tone. Your brain’s hearing system can interpret that difference as a rhythmic pulse, called a binaural beat.
For example, Gate 3 plays 432 Hz in the left ear and 440 Hz in the right. With the selected 8 Hz gap, a perceived beat can repeat about eight times a second. The pulse arises in how you hear the tones, rather than from an extra low note playing through the headphones.
The Earth reference
Lightning excites electromagnetic resonances in the space between Earth’s surface and the ionosphere, an electrically charged region of the atmosphere. These are the Schumann resonances. Their lowest mode is commonly described as being near 7.83 Hz.
Temperament lets you choose a 7.83 Hz or 8 Hz reference to set the spacing between the tones. Changing it smoothly retunes every gate. It does not measure the current resonance or broadcast Earth’s electromagnetic field. The sounds are generated on your device.
Seven gates, one pattern
Each gate is a pair of tones. Starting from Gate 3’s 432 Hz tone and selected 8 Hz gap, lower gates halve both frequencies and the gap; higher gates double them. This is octave scaling. The higher tone also switches ears at every step.
| Gate | Left | Right | Gap |
|---|
The gates are musical layers, not seven brain states or the measured higher Schumann resonances. Binaural beats are easier to perceive at lower pitches and smaller gaps; the upper gates may simply sound like higher tones.
Make the session yours
Use stereo headphones and adjust the listening volume with your device’s volume controls. Choose the gates you enjoy, set a duration, and add interval gongs if you wish. The sound rises and fades gently. Pause holds your place; Stop resets the session. You can return to the controls at any time.
